The train workshop was held during the train journey, following one of the participant’s (Jude) actual transition of moving to a new city for a new job. A new set of probes (Compass of Ourselves, DIY Music Kit, Stanhopes Thimbles and Sea Pottery pieces) were introduced to unfold insights from the Air[craft] workshop and open up space for Jude to imagine examples of digital jewellery for this particular context.
During the Air[craft] workshop I invited the participants to explore a range of design probes as stimuli to stir reflections on feelings of transitions and stimulate their imaginative thinking. The probes were designed with a certain level of an unfinished element that creates room for reflection on a sense of self. A variety of materials and forms has been explored to give participants options to freely choose the ones that speak to them most.
During my doctoral research, I developed the method of dialogical sketching. The method enabled an iterative dialogue not bound by certainty, but more by inference, interpretation and suggested meanings. Systems of sketching scaffolded conversations with participants bout personal issues and feelings that were difficult to articulate in a way that was imaginative, rather than descriptive.
The Air[craft] workshop was an experiential workshop which took place on a stationary plane at an airport and a discussion (following the plane experience) that took place in the airport terminal building. The workshop was set in a functioning (yet stationary plane) at the Aviation Academy in Newcastle, adjacent to Newcastle airport, UK.
